NEWCASLE - Benítez: \"We\'re good enough to stay in the Premier League\"

Published on: 13 March 2016

Amid huge expectation inside a packed press area at St. James's Park, Rafa Benítez gave his first press conference as new Newcastle boss. With relegation looming (second from bottom and a point from safety), the Spaniard has accepted the challenge of keeping the Magpies in the Premier League: "It's been an intense start. We wanted to train from the first moment. We need to give the players confidence. I know we have the ability. I am here because I believe these players are good enough to stay in the Premier League".

With ten games left to play, the new Magpies boss will begin his reign against league leaders Leicester City. "I'm here to give my very best. I have had offers in different countries, but at Liverpool we always talked about Newcastle as a massive club. These next ten games are the most important".

With one win and five defeats from their last six games, the Spaniard will be hoping to improve Newcastle's erratic form under Steve McLaren. "Hopefully, we can make the fans proud again. I have some experience of relegation battles. I expect 100 per cent from the players every game. We have to make some small changes, but we're a great team. What's important is to ensure that everyone gives it their all", he said. "For me, what's important is that we have a very good squad of players. We have ten crucial games left and we have to remain focussed. The fans are going to play a huge part. If it all goes to plan, at such a huge club, it'll all end well".
