Ghana legend Mohammed Polo claims no local coach can handle the Black Stars and wants the Ghana FA to appoint a foreigner.

Polo, nicknamed the dribbling magician during his playing days, says coaches lack the ability to manage the egos of players and believes an expatriate is best suited to handle the Black Stars.

The Black Stars are without a substantive coach after the Ghana FA terminated the contract of Goran Stevanovic last week.

The vacant position has attracted a host of names who have been linked with the attractive job with former French captain Marcel Desailly being the frontrunner.

Assistant coach Akwasi Appiah and Sellas Tetteh are local coaches fancied for the job with calls intensifying for an indigenous man to take-over.

Three-time African Footballer of the Year, Abedi Pele is also rumoured to be eyeing the job.

But Polo, a 1978 Africa Cup of Nations winner, says his compatriots cannot

"We want coaches who will be able to manage these players but I haven’t seen one in Ghana," Polo told Accra-based Happy FM

"I won't be surprised if the GFA appoints an expatriate for the job because they seem to be able to manage the egos of some of these players.

"We need someone who has the ability to handle these boys but I can’t see a local man doing that.

"I'm capable of doing that but I am not interested because I want to focus on building the capacity of up and coming talents.

"If the disciplinary measure that was taken against Kotoko's Ahmed Toure by coach Maxwell Konadu was correct, then he's the man. We need people like this."

The Ghana FA says it will appoint a new coach in three weeks.

IS DESAILY A FOREIGN OR A LOCAL COACH? I GUESS HE IS A 'FORCAL' COACH. LETS GIVE HIM THE JOB. HE CAN MANAGE OUR PLAYERS BCOS HE IS WELL RESPECTED ALL OVER THE WORLD.

So should the local coaches as we term them,go for ego management course or what? If Mr. Polo says the local coaches don't know how to manage players' ego and he goes on to praise Coach Konadu, then is coach Konadu an expatriate? When will they learn to manage the ego of these players? Is it at home or on the job? Lets forget these talks and do the right thing. Where was he when coach Tetteh brought the Under 20 trophies home with big ego guys like Ayew,Jonathan Mensah,Inkoom and co? Was he not there when coach Akwasi Appiah brought home the olympic gold? If he is only interested in unearthing talents into stars who would have big egos in the future so much so that his other colleagues can not manage while he can but not interested, then,he is to me,no true legend as we hold him high due to his days on the field. Ghana! God help us.

The guy should stop this nonesense. If he cannot apply he should allow those who wanted the job be given the chance but Sellas Tetteh is a failure for the senior side he should not be given the job.

Polo if u r capable of doing that what makes u think sellas tetteh or any other local coach will not be capable. Please we have a lot of respect 4 u so don't add salt into injury here.u think these foreign coaches give a shit weather we win or loose,as long as they r getting paid that's what matters to them the most.remember the world cup, kwasi appiah wanted to hug the coach 4 a goal scored and u saw how badly he was shoveld away.so please if u r capable 4 the job just let it be known..

This is the biggest nonsense I have ever read here: What Polo is trying to say is that no local coach can handle the black stars but he can. My question to Polo is is he a foreign or local coach? Has he ever attended any foreign coaching course since he retired from playing soccer? Pls Polo with all due respect, don't put your colleagues down and don't flatter yourself. If u say the local coaches cannot handle these boys, then u too cannot handle these boys because u are a local coach not a foreigner and u are not superior to them in terms of coaching. Thanx.

Please Polo shut your str_repeat('*',strlen('fuck')) up. You have been talking a lot of baseless issues now adays. You are not the only black star living legend at the moment. there are great legends like Abdul Razak, Opoku Nti and Ibrahim Sunday.

Point of correction. Coach Akwasi Appiah has not won any Olympic Gold. He rather won the All African Games(AAG) Gold). The two are not the same.Thank you.

  • Plavi 7 years ago

Mr Polo should spare us his nonsense talk, isn't he the same person who was rooting for a local coach 4 years ago? To the extent of accusing the GFA of taking bribes from foreign coaches just to appoint them? Now he eats humble pie? Naniama!!!

  • kindy-blitz nana boadu derickson 7 years ago

A local coach can do it.Do we need a capable man or an expatriate coach? If just an expatriate, then Sampon Siasia is available. Sellas Tetteh is the man to lead us. Infact, we also say this dat we need people who manage the egos oe our players. That is very right, but one should tel me how many of these expatriates could manage tge players, if they were albe to do, wuld there always be problems in camp? And beside, managing egos of players does not neccessarily means being strict n hard towards them NO! One thing a coach can do to win the loyalty of his players is to be friendly but gentle towards them. in this case they always their hearts out.

  • Kwame 7 years ago

If Ivory Coast with the likes of Drogba who have accomplished more than any of our players can dream of have a local coach then, our players need to SHUT UP!!!

  • JNR 7 years ago

I totally agree with him because the egos of these european based players are too big. Can you imagine any local coach trying to discipline the likes of Muntari, Asamoah Gyan etc... He will be subjected to serious abuse if he dares drop some favourite players. Also majority of the players won't respect a local coach but i feel the ONLY reason the GFA will appoint any local coach is to keep the cost down in terms of wages compared to the likes of a foreign coach. This is what it has come down to and the GFA has got a big headache in appointing the next coach... Do you appoint a local coach who wouldn't command the respect of most of the european based players but will be commanding a low wage? OR do you appoint another foreign coach with good CV, command the respect of all the players and be on a higher wage, even though you don't have enough funds to even pay compensation to the sacked one? What a dilemma the GFA is in and i don't have any sympathy for them!

    Is Polo a foreigner?

  • gentle john 7 years ago

Polo is 100% right lets be honest to ourselves no local can handle Black Stars at the moment, maybe in 2 or 3 years time young coaches like Maxwell Konadu,CK Akonnor,Yaw Acheampong,Yaw Prekoh ect can handle.

  • JOHN KOFI OPPONG KYEKYEKU 7 years ago

WE ALL WANT THE BEST FOR OUR STARS,POLO HAS EXPRESS HIS VIEW WHY DONT YOU DO THE SAME. OPINIONS ARE LIKE NOSES: FOR NOW WE NEED TO TRY ANOTHER FOREIGN COACH BUT WE NEED A HIGH PROFILE COACH. THE LOCAL COACHES SHOULD STUDY MORE AND WAIT PATIENCELY FOR THE RIGHT TIME OR ELSE THEY KNOW THE 24MILLION COACHES IN GHANA.

  • Thegreatest 7 years ago

Because the local coaches eat banku with the players, and also asked the players to pay for their banku.

  • pak 7 years ago

No the local don't have the mentality to do that.. they don't have the ability to handle the players who plays in European league.i understand the reason why Marcel Desailly plan to take Wilkins as his assistance if giving the jog..because he got the mentality when it comes to dealing with top class players..Lets be honest here and understand that our local coaches are not ready for the job at the moment..maybe some decades later..even that will be to young coaches coming up..
