PFAG consoles bereaved Ghana midfielder Michael Essien
Michael Essien's father James died on Sunday night

The Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG) have sent a message of condolence to bereaved Ghana midfielder Michael Essien.

The Chelsea ace was hit with the unfortunate news of his father’s passing upon arriving in the country on Sunday to rejoin the Black Stars for the 2014 World Cup qualifier against Zambia.

Essien’s deceased father – James Essien - was a former player of Ghana Premier League giants Hearts of Oak.

The PFAG – a professional welfare body for all Ghanaian players – in a statement signed by its general secretary Anthony Baffoe have conveyed their collective message of condolence to the Black Stars midfielder.

“The Professional Football Association of Ghana regrets the death of James Essien, the father of Michael Essien who is also the organizations 2nd Vice President and wishes to express its condolences,” the statement read.

“Father James also belonged to the football family, having played for Accra Hearts of Oak.

“On behalf of all our members, we would like to extend our condolences to Michael and his family. May his soul rest in peace.”
