Ghana's Premier League board chairman Welbeck Abra-Appiah has defended the decision to postpone this weekend's league matches.

The PLB has come under criticism for the frequent break in the Glo Premier League this season which many believe has contributed to the lack of interest from soccer fans.

But Abra-Appiah says such talks are misplaced and insists the postponement was done in the supreme interest of the nation to help two national teams.

"We've heard what people have been saying but the truth of the matter is that the postponement was done in consultation with the clubs and we did nothing untoward," Appiah said.

"We have two major international assignments this weekend and so it was important we put the games on hold and have a national focus of supporting the two national teams. We know our job and so people should allow us to do it."

Ghana's Olympic team has an image redemption exercise against Benin in the 2011 All Africa qualifier on Sunday following their shock exit from the London 2012 qualifier.

The national women's team must overturn a 1-0 deficit in the second leg of the 2012 London Olympic Games qualifier against Ethiopia on Saturday at the El-Wak stadium.
