Form so far

A 1-0 win over Japan in the Round of 16 helped Korea Republic qualify for the quarter-finals following an impressive group stage campaign which saw them win two and lose one of their three matches. After defeat to Portugal in their opening Group F match, the Koreans responded superbly by recording back-to-back victories against South Africa and then six-time champions Argentina.

Senegal have been equally impressive en route to the last eight, with Youssouph Dabo’s side topping Group A thanks to two wins and a draw with host nation Poland. The highly-regarded Africans, who have only conceded once so far, subsequently beat Nigeria in the Round of 16 to set up the eagerly anticipated showdown with Korea Republic.

Leading goalscorers

Oh Se-hun’s 84th minute winner against Japan last time saw the livewire forward take his tournament tally to two and claim top spot in the Korea Republic goalscoring charts. Meanwhile, Amadou Sagna has netted four times for Senegal. The first of his three goals against Tahiti came after only 9.6 seconds – a record for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Previous meetings

Wednesday’s match will be first time the two teams have played each other at this level.

FIFA U-20 World Cup history

With an impressive 12 AFC U-19 Championship titles to their name, Korea Republic are Asia’s most accomplished side in the age category. Poland 2019 represents their 15th FIFA U-20 World Cup appearance, with a fourth-place finish in 1983 their best display as of today.

By way of contrast, this is only the third time Senegal have featured at the FIFA U-20 World Cup. They made their competition debut in 2015 – a tournament which saw them finish fourth after losing to Mali in a play-off for third place.
