Sampdoria boss linked with Italy post

As the Italian football federation continues their search to replace the departing Antonio Conte, they are now considering a move for Sampdoria‘s Vincenzo Montella.

Conte will relinquish the Azzurri reins following the European Championships this forthcoming summer, as the 46-year-old prepares to take over Premier League side, Chelsea.

Tuttosport have confirmed this latest development, claiming that Montella now joins Roma boss, Luciano Spalletti, as some of the leading names to take the coveted Italy role.

Carlo Ancelotti and Claudio Ranieri had previously been on the shortlist, however the federation have now accepted that these options are almost impossible.

As a coach, Montella spent a three-year stint with Fiorentina, before he left the club in sour circumstances last summer.

Following his Viola departure, the 41-year-old replaced Walter Zenga as Sampdoria coach in November, and his side currently occupy 15th place, sitting just five points above the Serie A relegation zone.

During his playing career, Montella made 20 appearances for the Azzurri, scoring on three occasions.
