Satisfied Napoli coach Sarri focussed on improving

Maurizio Sarri has described his Napoli side as extraordinary but believes there is still room for improvement.

The Neapolitans travel to the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia on Sunday to face a high-flying Atalanta side and Sarri was keen to boast about his Azzurri record ahead of the match.

“We have won 16 games out of 23, scored 53 goals and conceded 15,” said the Napoli coach in his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s fixture.

“Our forwards have scored 43 goals between them, so I cannot help but be satisfied but we always want to improve and if we get even better numbers then we’re tough to deal with.

“We’ve won seven of our last nine games, so I don’t see why people keep asking about the one defeat to Bologna.

“Tomorrow we’ll be facing an Atalanta side that in terms of home form are one of the best in Serie A.”

Sarri, once again, suppressed talk of the Scudetto, citing the strength of Inter and Juventus as barriers to success.

“Our ambitions at the moment are not entirely clear, we’ll see what our journey allows us to target,” noted Sarri.

“We started this new journey five months ago and are already doing better than we expected.

“Juventus have won four titles in a row and are one of the top clubs in Europe while Inter are the queen of the transfer market, so it seems obvious to me that they should be the favourites for the Scudetto.

“Historically Napoli always had a lot of potential and went through ups and downs, so we must always be wary and focused.

“If this team improves its attacking statistics, it becomes like a tank, however, if that means reducing the balance of the side, I’m not sure it’d be worth it.”

When quizzed about the club’s mindset heading into the January transfer window, the former Empoli boss maintained a state of contentment with his current squad.

“I discussed it briefly with the directors, but I am not coach who is good at buying players, I focus on improving the ones I have.”

“Otherwise I’d have become a director of sport instead.”
