Saudi giants Al Ahli name Fossati as new head coach

Jeddah: AFC Champions League hopefuls Al Ahli Saudi FC have named Uruguayan Jorge Fossati as their new head coach following the departure of previous incumbent Paulo Guede.

The 66-year-old, who was in charge of the Qatar national team until July 2017, arrives with Al Ahli some 10 points behind Saudi Pro League leaders Al Hilal and having been knocked out of the King’s Cup by Al Wehda Club.

Fossati has experience of top-flight football in Saudi Arabia thanks to a previous spell with Al Shabab during which he guided the Riyadh-based club to a semi-final finish in the 2010 edition of the AFC Champions League.

Just 12 months later the Montevideo native, who was a goalkeeper during his playing days, successively oversaw Qatari outfit Al Sadd’s title success in the same competition.

Fossati will cross paths with Al Sadd once again in this season’s AFC Champions League after Al Ahli were drawn alongside his former employers in Group D, where they also have Persepolis FC from the Islamic Republic of Iran and a yet to be decided play-off winner for company.
