Shelvey hails Bruce impact

Jonjo Shelvey says that Steve Bruce has already had a positive impact on Newcastle United during his short time in charge.

Bruce left Sheffield Wednesday last week to take over from Rafael Benitez at St James' Park and was in the stands to see his new team beat West Ham in the Premier League Asia Trophy in Shanghai, China.

He has made a massive difference. He is constantly talking to you and that is what you want.

He was only appointed United boss on Wednesday but Shelvey says he has already made a significant difference.

After beating the Hammers 1-0 with a goal from Yoshinori Muto, Shelvey told Sky Sports: "Steve has come in and changed the formation, and after two days we looked a lot more comfortable. I think we thoroughly deserved to win.

"When a new manager comes in training goes up a couple of notches and everyone is busy and looking to impress.

"He has made a massive difference. He is constantly talking to you and that is what you want."

United lost 4-0 to Wolves on Wednesday but Bruce changed formation to 3-5-2 and was rewarded by a much-improved performance.

The win over the Hammers means that United finish third in the competition, won by Wolves who beat Manchester City on penalties in the final.

Newcastle now head back to the UK and continue their pre-season fixtures with a trip to face Championship side Preston next Saturday. Then they take on Hibernian in Edinburgh before a home game against Saint-Etienne.

They begin the new Premier League season at home to Arsenal on 11th August and are 29/10 to start with a win while the Gunners are 19/20 with the draw 12/5.

Newcastle are 9/4 to be relegated next season with Brighton, who just avoided the drop last term, 15/8.
