Spalletti: Inter have to do more in the final third

Published on: 19 January 2019

After coming up short against Sassuolo, Inter coach Luciano Spalletti felt his side created a more and just need to be more clinical if they are to take three points from matches of this nature.

With the game ending 0-0, Spalletti made two late changes, bringing on Lautaro Martinez and Borja Valero, though the swaps were like for like, as Matteo Politano and Borja Valero came off, with the coach not wanting to risk conceding.

“If I put too many offensive players on, then we would risk going behind,” Spalletti told the press.

“Balance in the team counts, and in defence we were good, despite losing some silly balls.

“We have to do more in the final third, particularly on individual duels. Steps have to be taken forward.

“If you win the ball between the lines, you have to try and score right away. We tried, but it cost us on some occasions.

“It was a complicated, and dangerous, game, as well as a good one. They [Sassuolo] had some good chances, but in my opinion we had more.”

Radja Nainggolan started on the bench, and despite being brought on with 30 minutes to play, he failed to make the required impact.

“We saw again tonight, he [Nainggolan] isn’t yet at his best,” Spalletti went on. “However, I put him on to try and see if he could give us a bit extra in attack.

“In some games we struggle to create a lot of opportunities, and Radja hasn’t been in the best condition, but I know in the future he will be.

Mauro Icardi only had 16 touches of the ball, as he failed to exert any influence on the game, amid ongoing contract talks with the club.

“I don’t think he is under any pressure,” Spalletti said. “He had the shoulders of Ibrahimovic, he is mentally strong, and has a strong character.

“Everything always depends on expectations, you can’t think he has to score in every game. While, tonight he didn’t contribute much to the team’s play.”
