Top 5: Serie A Title Run-ins

Published on: 01 April 2016

Following Juventus‘ dominance in recent years, Napoli have shown their potential to mount a significant challenge for this season’s Scudetto.

With the possibility of an enthralling race to be crowned Italian Champions, we have looked back through the years to re-live some of the closest finishes to a Serie A season.

1937-38: Inter

Inter took the title in the 1937-38 season following one of the most open Scudetto races of all time.

What made the finish so intriguing was that, with just three matches to go, just two points separated the top five teams.

Juventus held a one-point advantage ahead of Inter, while AC Milan, Unione Triestina and Bologna were locked together another point behind.

In round 28 (of 30), seven of the eight weekend matches ended in a draw with all five teams failing to make a move for the Championship.

In the following week, the Bianconeri would suffer a crucial loss to Liguria as Inter took the lead with victory over Roma.

Meanwhile, for the second week running, Milan, Bologna and Triestina dropped points, with the two former clubs remaining within two points of the lead, joined by Genoa on 37 points.

The Nerazzurri would go on to win, extending their leading margin to two points while the next six clubs, incredibly, finished within three points of each other and were left ruing their missed opportunities.

1963-64: Bologna

Bologna’s seventh and last Scudetto to date was arguably the closest ever finish to a Serie A finish, particularly due to the title being decided via a play-off.

The Rossoblu and Inter had clearly stood out as the top two clubs for most of the season and spent the last eight rounds of the season within a point of one another.

Having drawn level on 49 points following round 31, both teams remained locked together for the final three rounds recording a draw in round 32 and finishing the regular season with two wins.

A play-off would ensue between the clubs which remains the last time Serie A was decided in such a manner.

Despite having got the better of the Bolognese a matter of weeks before-hand, Inter would go on to suffer a 2-0 loss with the Rossoblu recording what is still their last league title to date.
