Valero delights in iconic status at Fiorentina

After experiencing a fairly nomadic career before his switch to Fiorentina in 2012, Borja Valero has revealed that he is loving life with the Viola, although is still unsure as to whether he will end his career with the club.

The 31-year-old has admitted that never before has he felt like he has been granted such significance within a club, and that he also feels like somewhat of a legend within the streets of Florence.

“I am extremely happy at this point in my career,” said Valero to AS. “I went through a bit of a negative period before I arrived in Florence but now that time has passed.

“Florence is a place I love and my family has also settled well here. I am loved here and I feel like an idol.

“I appear to be more important here than I have been anywhere else, however, I do not know if I will retire in the shirt of Fiorentina.”

The former Real Madrid man also disclosed the crucial nature of his ball-playing ability within the midfield of Paulo Sousa’s side, whilst also discussing the more creative roles he has occupied previously in his long career.

“I have always acted as a playmaker in the centre of midfield,” Valero added. “When I was at Madrid, I had been a trequartista.

“But in modern football this position no longer exists. Now I prefer to play a lot quicker and with more physicality.

“My position on the field for Fiorentina is crucial because I have a responsibility to maintain the balance of the team and to also trigger breaks on the counter attack.”
