Christian Atsu put up an excellent performance for Newcastle United as they travelled to hold Watford to a  1-1 draw in their Premier League match on Saturday.

The Ghana international was axed  from the Magpies squad in their previous match on Boxing Day after some unimpressive showing in recent matches.

But Atsu seems to have learnt his lessons as he played his heart out and was instrumental in his side's goal which could spark him being given regular playing time at Newcastle.

The Ghana star will take the lion share of the credit for Newcastle's opener as he started the fabulously worked goal by the visiting side.

Atsu had a lovely drop of the shoulder to lose two Watford players and with simple well-weighted pass to release Ritchie on the left who crossed for Rondon to gleefully nodded home.

Substitute Abdoulaye Doucoure salvaged a point for Watford but he should have earned his side all three against Newcastle at Vicarage Road.

The French midfielder headed the Hornets level with eight minutes remaining but then missed an easier opportunity with another header seconds from the end.

The Hornets had dominated possession during the match but found it difficult to break down a stubborn and resolute Magpies defence who took the lead in the 29th minute through Salomon Rondon's header from Matt Ritchie's cross.

The Venezuelan also had two goals disallowed for offside, although the first decision was marginal.
