Whitecaps fall to the Earthquakes

The Vancouver Whitecaps remain at the foot of the table in the Western Conference after losing 3-1 to the visiting San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday.

Winless in eight contests, the Whitecaps last won against FC Dallas at the end of May. Doneil Henry gave Vancouver the early advantage at BC Place scoring in the seventh minute.

The defender was in the penalty area for a free kick and reacted first to a loose ball to lash his shot past Daniel Vega in the San Jose net.

However the lead lasted all of nine minutes as Valeri Qazaishvili stabbed home from close range after Vancouver failed to deal with a cross from the right.

Qazaishvili was involved in the second goal for the visitors as his shot in the 34th minute smacked the post, rebounded off goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau and was eventually forced over the line by Chris Wondolowski.

Magnus Eriksson added a third for San Jose in the second half in a result that sees San Jose fifth in the Western Conference standings, tied with fourth place Minnesota United on 34 points.

Meanwhile Minnesota was picking up a point at the Rio Tinto Stadium in a 1-1 draw with Real Salt Lake.

Darwin Quintero opened the scoring for the visitors with a header from a yard out only to see Marcelo Silva equalize 13 minutes later.

Vito Mannone in the Minnesota net should have done better as the Loons missed out on an opportunity to move into third in the Western Conference.

On Sunday evening, Atlanta are 8/15 to get the better of DC United, who are 17/4 to win, with the draw priced at 7/2.
