Cornella: Chinese PR superstar Wu Lei was on target on Saturday to help Espanyol clinch the final spot in the 2019-20 UEFA Europa League qualifiers at the RCDE Stadium.

The 2-0 victory over Real Sociedad in the final round of La Liga means Espanyol jumped two spots to seventh in the standings on 53 points - returning to European action after more than a decade.

Wu Lei’s 65-minute strike following Roberto Rosales’ opener seven minutes earlier, was his third goal for Espanyol in 16 appearances and the forward received a standing ovation from the home crowd after coming off in the 80th minute.

The 27-year-old was the Chinese Super League's top goal scorer when he moved to Espanyol in January from Shanghai SIPG and Wu Lei is relishing the chance to play in the Europa League next season.

“It has always been my dream to play abroad. After half a year here, I’m getting the chance to play in the Europa League next season, which will be a great experience for me,” Wu Lei told local media.

“I will be able to learn a lot. There will be more matches to play and I’m very glad to have the chance to take on other European clubs.”

China PR will look to maximise on Wu Lei's European experience in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Qatar.
