Doha: Qatar Stars League champions Al Sadd SC have named Spain and Barcelona great Xavi as head coach on a two-year contract.

FIFA World Cup winner Xavi, who played his last competitive match in a 2019 AFC Champions League tie against Islamic Republic of Iran's Persepolis on May 20, had announced his retirement on May 2.

Xavi, who played four seasons in Al Sadd's colours, had indicated coaching would be the next step of his career and his first match in charge will be the AFC Champions League Round of 16 tie against local rivals Al Duhail on August 5 and 13.

Al Sadd will have a pre-season training camp in Girona, Italy prior to the Qatar season kicking off.

Xavi moved to Al Sadd in 2015, after bringing the curtain down on his Barcelona career, having won eight La Liga titles, three Copas del Rey and four Champions Leagues with the Spanish giants.
