Chelsea outcast urged to join Lazio

The assistant of former Chelsea coach Antonio Conte has urged full-back Davide Zappacosta to leave the club this month amidst interest from Lazio.

Angelo Alessio worked as Conte’s right-hand man at Stamford Bridge from 2016 until last June, when the tactician was dismissed from his role despite leading the Blues to triumph in the FA Cup.

Italian international Zappacosta was brought in by Conte in 2017, but has rarely featured under incumbent Maurizio Sarri and with Lazio thought to be keen, Alessio has urged him to make the move to Rome.

“If he [Zappacosta] wants regular playing time he has to return to Serie A,” Alessio told RMC Sport. “He wants to be an important figure so he must do something about it. Going to Lazio would allow him to be a protagonist.”

Zappacosta arrived at Chelsea from Torino but has struggled to make an impact in the Premier League, with just 24 appearances in his two seasons in West London.
