Coleman: Tough fixtures ahead

Published on: 11 June 2019

Republic of Ireland captain Seamus Coleman has admitted that his side have plenty of tough games ahead of them in trying to qualify for the European Championship finals.

Coleman was speaking after a lacklustre 2-0 home win over Gibraltar, a result which moved the Republic on to ten points from four games played.

We've got some big games coming up and that's where we'll be tested.

However, their three wins have come against Gibraltar twice and Georgia, while their other game played saw them secure a valuable 1-1 draw in Denmark.

Ireland have yet to face Nations League semi-finalists Switzerland and Coleman is aware that the remaining programme of fixtures represents a tough test.

He said after a disappointing display in Dublin: "We understand that pressure comes with the job and people won't be very happy with the performance.

"But we've got 10 points from 12 and that's how we look at it - the manager is happy with our points on the board.

"We've got some big games coming up and that's where we'll be tested.

"We know we’ve got some very tough games coming up and they're going to be the deciding games. We've got a bit of a head start."

The Republic of Ireland can be backed at 4/1 to finish top of qualifying Group D, while they are available at 11/10 to finish in the top two and secure automatic qualification for Euro 2020.
