Glory appreciate support

Star attacker Chris Ikonomidis hopes Perth Glory's success will continue and keep the crowds buzzing next season.

The biggest A-League Grand Final attendance in A-League history, 56,371, watched the Glory's penalty shootout defeat to Sydney FC at Optus Stadium.

Perth's fans had already seen their team clinch the Premier's Plate, finishing eight points clear of the Sky Blues in the final standings.

There is much for the Glory faithful to look forward to in what will be Tony Popovic's second campaign in charge, as Asian Champions League football will come to Perth for the first time.

Despite the heartbreak of their 4-1 shootout loss to Steve Corica's team, Australia international Ikonomidis says the club should be proud of their season.

"I had my heart set on winning this one; it would've been the icing on the cake but it obviously wasn't meant to be," he said. "But I think we can be proud of what we've achieved this season."

The Grand Final crowd was the largest Perth has ever seen for a football game, and Ikonomidis added: "It was unreal from our fans, they were awesome the whole game and I'm sorry we couldn't give them a title at the end of it but they were fantastic and we really appreciate it.

"If we keep playing the way we played this season the (crowd) numbers will continue to grow and speaking to a lot of fans outside, they're fanatical, they love it."

The 24-year-old, who was subbed out of the decider during extra time, has two more years left on his contract but is likely to attract overseas interest.

Meanwhile, Melbourne Victory are 9/5 to win their next game against Sanfrecce Hiroshima, who are 6/4 with the draw 11/5. Victory are 7/2 to win by a one-goal margin.
