Grassroots football takes centre stage in Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur: The importance of grassroots football in Asia was further emphasised in the Malaysian capital on Monday as members of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Grassroots Panel convened for the first time since the AFC Executive and Technical Committees approved its formation.

Comprising some of Asia’s most experienced grassroots managers, the panel examined the current state and challenges facing grassroots football and discussed the strategic direction to further develop and strengthen the movement throughout the continent.

Defined to encompass ‘all football which is non-professional and non-elite,’ the role of grassroots was reinforced by AFC Technical Director Andy Roxburgh, who led the discussions.

“Every top star was once a grassroots player but producing top level footballers is merely a by-product of grassroots football. The purpose of the grassroots game is to have mass participation, providing opportunities for everyone regardless of age, gender, culture, and playing standards.

“Building a strong base through the grassroots is necessary for the survival of the game. It represents a key component for all Member Associations to achieve success in all aspects of football,” said Roxburgh.

“Creating a dynamic grassroots environment has enormous value from a sporting, health, social and educational perspective”, he added.

The panel members supported the establishment of an AFC Grassroots Charter, a development tool which aims to stimulate and encourage further development in grassroots football throughout Asia.

Philippine Football Federation National Grassroots Development Officer Aquilino P. Pastoral III said: “Football is gaining popularity in the Philippines and grassroots has certainly played a critical part to spread the love of the game. It is important that we set out strategic targets to drive the growth of grassroots football.

“Each country has its own set of unique challenges but through a collaborative approach, I am confident that we can draw on our collective strengths to enhance the state of grassroots football in Asia.”

The future of grassroots football in Asia will continue to be under the microscope in the Malaysian capital this week as the first AFC Grassroots Conference commences on Tuesday, bringing together grassroots managers from all over the continent.
