Lampard talks up midfield options

Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard says he may be more flexible in his approach than former Blues boss Maurizio Sarri proved to be last season.

Sarri was rigid in his decision to utilise Italy international Jorginho as his main defensive midfielder, leaving N'Golo Kante to adapt to a new role on the right side, despite having become a master of the art of sitting just in front of the defence.

I'm a new manager, I have new ideas. We might be more adaptable in the way we play.

However, Kante may be back in his preferred role next term, despite Lampard talking of how impressed he has been with the play of Jorginho since he took charge at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard told the Express: "Jorginho is a fantastic player. We know all about his comfort on the ball and bravery to receive the ball in any area.

"It is not something that's normal to receive the ball in tight areas and deal with the ball and keep doing it constantly.

"He became a conversation last year - I've been there. As a player, sometimes things are out of your control and the conversation carries on very quickly without you.

"He played in one position and the manager had faith in him and it became something that was talked about, possibly too much.

"But I'm a new manager, I have new ideas. We might be more adaptable in the way we play."

Chelsea finished in third place in the Premier League last season, while also winning the Europa League, defeating Arsenal 4-1 in the final in Baku.

The Blues are 5/4 to finish in the top four in the league next season, while they are 25/1 to be crowned Premier League champions.
