Mancini: Inter are still aiming for Champions League qualification

Published on: 09 April 2016

Despite lying eight points behind third-placed Roma, Inter coach Roberto Mancini has not changed the Nerazzurri’s Serie A objective of Champions League qualification.

The Biscione travel to Frosinone on Saturday looking for their first away win in the league since January 6, though the 51-year-old emphasised his team had not given up on the season.

“I don’t think it’s fair to speak of changing our goals,” he told reporters at the pre-match press conference. ”

“It will be difficult to catch Roma but as long as there are points [available], you just keep trying.

“We have to be professionals and give 100%. With 21 points up for grabs, it is too soon to stop talking [of Champions League qualification].”

Having led the Serie A over the Christmas break, Inter have won just five of their 14 league fixture in 2016 and Mancini conceded his team still had much to improve.

“When you are rebuilding something, you sometimes think it can be achieved in less time, but that did not happen,” he continued.

“We could have showed more strength in difficult times but it that will take time and patience.

“I don’t think it’s a problem with concentration. Perhaps the results have seen our confidence diminished and a more timid approach has brought about the current circumstances.”

With seven Serie A rounds left in the season, transfer rumours have already started to surround the Nerazzurri, having been linked once again to Manchester City’s Yaya Toure. However, the former City coach would not speculate on any player movements.

“It’s too early to talk about players,” he added. “We have to think about the last month of the season.

“There is always time for the transfer market after this.”
