Persepolis clinch sixth Hazfi Cup

Published on: 02 June 2019

Ahvaz: Ali Alipour was Persepolis FC's hero as his strike proved to be the difference in their 1-0 win over Damash Gilan to secure their sixth Hazfi Cup on Sunday.

On the back of defending their Iran Pro League title, the Tehran-based club achieved a domestic double by also claiming their sixth Hazfi Cup.

The last time Persepolis had achieved such a feat was back in 1999.

Damash, who plays in Iran Football's 2nd Division, came into the match as the dark horse but a convincing 2-1 win over Saipa FC in the semi-finals gave them much to be confident for and began brightly against Persepolis.

However, the 2018 AFC Champions League finalists were unfazed by Damash's challenge and flexed their muscles, taking the lead in the 22nd minute through Alipour's effort.

Damash returned into the second half looking to equalise, but Persepolis, who had the backing of their raving fans at the Foolad Arena, kept a sturdy defence to keep their opponents at bay.

Despite their best attempts, Damash couldn't beat Persepolis goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand and failed to find the back of the net, and that was enough for Persepolis to go on lifting their first Hazfi Cup since 2011.
