Sri Lanka fall to Lithuania in final friendly

Published on: 13 July 2018

In their first meeting three nights ago, Sri Lanka played a strong defence game to finish with a goalless draw but the South Asians played more aggressively this time around and had the first chance on goal in the second minute when skipper Bandara Warakagoda headed the ball just off target.

Lithuania then regained control of the game but Sri Lanka’s backline kept the European offence at bay.

However, the visitors eventually broke the deadlock in the 30th minute when Laurynas Stonkus latched onto a loose ball and fired home.

Almost immediately after the restart, Sri Lanka almost drew level when Rizkhan Faizer let loose a right-footed strike from outside the box but his shot was just wide.

Sri Lanka maintained their compact defence in the second half and played on the counter-attack but Lithuania extended their lead in the 59th minute when Simonas Paulius rose highest to head in Tadas Eliosius corner kick.

Both sides made a string of substitutions in the final 20 minutes and despite Sri Lanka’s best efforts, Lithuania held on to claim the win.
